Shrugging off suburban nightmares
On St. Paul Saturday nights

To the kids like us it seemed like such a waste of time

So I got a job and I spent all my money down at the record store
On Springsteen albums, punk rock singles, and 1984
And I waited by the phone every night hoping she would call
I knew one day everything would change and we were gonna have it all
To the kids like us there was no better place to fall

Angry and young and could you be the one

Stupid and scared and never prepared
For the life that was thrown in our face

So I got a guitar and I started a band and I tried to get my songs just right
And I still take every chance I get to play the bars on Saturday night
And I ain’t so sure this is where we’re supposed to end up
But I ain’t sure there’s a better way to do it so I guess we’re out of luck
All the kids like us who ain’t ever gonna give it up

We all settle down and we all move away and learn to live a life we despise
With wives and kids and a mortgage to pay and a beautiful but thin disguise
But I still believe we’re out there somewhere waiting for life to begin
I still believe we’ll be back someday, never give up, never give in
The kids like us will always find a way to win
