Shrugging off suburban nightmares On St. Paul Saturday nights Me and the gang and the loneliest days We were lucky we made it alive To the kids like us it seemed like such a waste of time So I got a job and I spent all my money down at the record store On Springsteen albums, punk rock singles, and 1984 And I waited by the phone every night hoping she would call I knew one day everything would change and we were gonna have it all To the kids like us there was no better place to fall Angry and young and could you be the one And we gotta get out of this place Stupid and scared and never prepared For the life that was thrown in our face So I got a guitar and I started a band and I tried to get my songs just right And I still take every chance I get to play the bars on Saturday night And I ain’t so sure this is where we’re supposed to end up But I ain’t sure there’s a better way to do it so I guess we’re out of luck All the kids like us who ain’t ever gonna give it up We all settle down and we all move away and learn to live a life we despise With wives and kids and a mortgage to pay and a beautiful but thin disguise But I still believe we’re out there somewhere waiting for life to begin I still believe we’ll be back someday, never give up, never give in The kids like us will always find a way to win

All At Once 04:20
In the dark light of December With the hope still in her heart She turned the car off and she whispered This is where we start She closed the curtains in the bedroom She walked slowly cross the floor This time I hope I ain’t mistaken Like I always was before All at once you start believing All at once you see the light All at once you can’t remember If it’s gonna be alright It’s gotta be tonight She crawled beneath the sheets in silence She left the light on for a while Carry on and let the warmth of all her memories Turn her lips into a smile But with the night there comes the longing Played out in technicolour dreams Miles away from desperation Always closer than it seems All at once you start believing All at once you see the light All at once you can’t remember If it’s gonna be alright It’s gotta be tonight If there’s a chance to make some big mistake let’s turn this thing around Through the ashes and the remnants of this godforsaken town Maybe these four wheels can carry me all the way back home I don’t know In the dark light of December With all the hope left in her heart She turned the key to start the engine This is where we start

Beautiful 04:35
You tear it all down and try to put the pieces back where they fit It’s a hard price to pay when you lose your way cause you don’t know when to quit When the lights come up on these monuments to mileage And days driven to dust Will there be some shred of the life we led in the ashes and the rust Don’t you want to be beautiful? There’s a conversation that scatters and fades through the miles, through the wire There’s a hope that sings of the brightest things through the darkness and the mire There’s a reason to bleed every drop you have for a bit of something more There’s a break in the line Oh darling I’ve never been this far before Don’t you want to be beautiful? A little more time, a little bit further that I’ve gotta fall A little more time, a little bit further than I have ever gone A little more time, a little bit further that I have got to fall It takes a little more time, a little bit further than I have ever been before Don’t you want to be beautiful?

Ashes 03:24
It comes when you least expect it Like the first day of summertime Sunshine remains through the doubt and the rain And everybody’s feeling fine It’s over before you know it Never had a chance to begin The loneliest hearts, covered up in the dark I can’t wait to be there again Tell me to rely on my defenses Tell me everything will be just fine Tell me all the best of your excuses Make up your mind A word or two from the preacher A word or two from the soul It’s never our voice and it’s never our choice It’s always the best way to go A whisper, a prayer, or a promise Silence is all I can do It’s hard to get by on the faith you prescribe When there’s nothing to hold on to Tell me to rely on my defenses Tell me everything will be just fine Tell me all the best of your excuses Make up your mind Tell me that it all could be so easy Tell me I should find a way back home Tell me it’s the last of my excuses And I’m on my own

Nothing comes easy You can’t get life for free anymore A pocket full of miracles Crumble to dirt on the bedroom floor Don’t you think it’s about time Don’t you think it’s about time We stop crying in the sunshine, waiting for a rainy day Rolled into town and was gone without a word of thanks A couple more miles hang around for awhile And we’re off to make the same mistakes A telephone call from a hotel room Number 301 A turn of the key, man I just wanna be Where the damage is done Don’t you think it’s about time Don’t you think it’s about time We stop crying in the sunshine, waiting for a rainy day Everybody’s watching Nobody’s listening Every single word is true Everybody’s thinking it Nobody’s saying it What are you gonna do Turn this thing around and start it all over again Turn this thing around and get back to the place we’ve been Don’t you think it’s about time Don’t you think it’s about time We stop crying in the sunshine, waiting for a rainy day We stop crying in the sunshine, waiting for a rainy day
